Thin-Finish concrete overlay on exposed agg?

I would think with such a rough profile it would adhere very well but will need additional coats to smooth it out. I would love to hear from someone who has actually done this to get a reading on what it will take and confidence that it will last long term. Thanks

Posts: 447 03/14/11 11:22 AM	I did an interior pool deck about 4-5 years ago. We did grind the surface first ( not smooth, but knocked the high points down pretty good) Make sure you put that first application of thin finish down real tight. ( we scrubbed it in with stiff brushes) Then you can start building from there. We were doing a random stone troweldown. We applied 1 bond coat, 2 build coats, tape pattern, lock down coat then texture. Worked great. Being a random trowel, might not have to put extra build coat but we did and I am glad we did, made for nicer surface to tape pattern.

Posts: 182 03/14/11 01:09 PM Boom, Boom, Boom.	There is no problem going over exposed aggregate but you must make sure that there is no sealer on the surface first. These surfaces tend to have sealer on them because it’s stressed to seal these surfaces as proper maintenance. If you’re not sure if the surface has sealer on it you can be test it by spraying some water on the surface and see if it beads or if it soaks in and darkens the surface. If you have to remove sealer it can be removed by sand blasting it out of all the crevasses. The easiest way is to sand blast would be using an attachment for your pressure washer. At times depending on the size of the stone you may want to grind the surface down so that you don’t need to add as much material to make it smooth. But in either case you will still need to do your pressure washing, acid wash (not etch) followed by the ammonia wash.

Posts: 54 03/14/11 01:41 PM	This was an exposed aggregate. Didn't have to sand blast since sealer was worn off. Pressure washing was horrible, felt like you were getting hit with BB's. Did a splatter knock down. Toughest part was getting rid of the exposed aggregate texture along coping. Posts: 265 03/19/11 01:03 PM	Hey Colo how did it turn out? Did a couple of these already ..there was no sealer so we just pressure washed. I usually broom on a couple of coats of TF and that takes care of the rough surface ...hey works for me. Then your trowel coat takes care of the broom lines.

Posts: 33 03/30/11 05:38 PM	I have done a number of these and have ground everyone down to a flat surface. The first one I did seamed like the riverrock was not pourse enough to accept the thin finfish and would just flake off the rock and not the cement. A turbo grinder with a 10" cupwheel with water is a lot faster than 3 or 4 extra coats of thin finish ,d u know its profiled right.

Posts: 160 04/12/11 06:17 PM	We have done dozens of overlays over exposed ag. Like Mario said, make sure the surface is not sealed, followed by aggresive pressure wash, acid etch and neutralize. Use a thinner mix for your first coat then a final magic trowel coat should give you a smooth surface to do your design on.

Posts: 1 09/02/11 11:58 AM	How did your job turn out? I have done this many times, but in two application, and if it sealed, you definitely have to strip it. So here is how I usually go about it: Step 1 - strip it. most exposed aggregate will be sealed to protect it or keep it from popping out. this step is crucial. Step 2 - lay down your first coat of overlay. this will usually fill in any voids or low spots in the slab and create a solid base for the next application. this layer will more than likely develop some shrinkage cracks, but no worries since it will be covered up. Step 3- lay down the second application and finish as usual. I have a company that I use which is fairly close to Chicago and they have a great self-leveling overlay for a great price and I usually get it the day after I order it.
