 Had a similar situation. I took sheets of 1/4 Inch durarock and got them coated, colored and sealed.

 Next I drew the wall dimensions on the floor and filled it in with a variety of different irregular squares and rectangles that I kept cutting from the    sheets.

 I cut the pieces with a 4" diamond blade. Tried to make the cut edges a little wavy  and chattered. I kept a 1/2 inch joint in between and made sure to keep breaking the joints apart like you would with ledge stone. After It was all dry set the way I liked It, I numbered all the pieces with blue tape and a sharpie.

Next was to lay all the pieces just like you would a tile install ( 1/4 notch trowel/modified thin set). I grouted with tile grout and applied one last coat of  sealer to the whole wall.

 Of coarse this would be much easier and faster if you just cut the sheets into perfect squares and laid and grouted like standard tile. 

Make sure to do the proper waterproofing and to bridge over the joints on the 1/2" durarock.

 Didn't take any pictures of that project.  I'ts real close to home though, I'll give her a call and see If she will let me take a few. She's one of those broads that keeps her hair cut about an1/8 inch long, kinda freaks me out!  Anyhow, I'd like to have a few pictures of that one, (didn't own a digital camera at the time.)  It was two tub surounds and a 6'x6' walk in shower.
