Posts: 3 07/26/10 02:14 PM	Tags : None I am quoting a job to repair an awful concrete stamp job around a pool. The existing stamp pattern is chipping and pot-holing in many places. Also some sort of sealer is delaminating all over the place. My plan is to scarify the deck to remove the old stamp pattern and start with a clean slate. Then replace with a thin stamp overlay. My question is: Is taking as much as 1/4" of the top too much for a scarifer to handle? Would it take forever to do? Or could I strip the sealer off some way and put TP right on top of the existing stamp pattern to cover it up. Any help or comments would be very appreciated. Posts: 2871 07/26/10 03:56 PM	Yikes!!!!!!! Ok, as I look at this "stamp job"...... Looks as if just a powdered release was used and no color hardener. The areas that are peeling up are caused by not washing off the excess release. Looks as it the delamination is to the aggregate suggesting release thrown in on bleed water to dry it up and then stamped. Broom marks were to work up some paste to get an impression......... Anyway, doesn't matter. A shot blast would be a little messy as the unlevel surface would cause a lot of bead blow out under the skirt. A scarifier with new teeth would probably be the best way to go. You don't have to get it level, just clean. I would do a good power wash with a turbo bit afterwards to blow off any fractured surfaces. A grinder will have to be used on the deep joints that the scarifier didn't reach. The cantilevered edge would have to be ground off also. Adjust your pricing for the added prep work. a 10" scarifier would really help on time but may require 200v. Looks as if this is a liner pool or I would suggest emptying the pool. You really need to cover the water with visqueen, taped under the overhang. (Throw some styrofoam pieces under the plastic to keep it floating). gene ec-Indy

Posts: 2873 07/27/10 05:41 AM	I agree with glam. But here's another way to look at this project. Most pools are installed in a really difficult area to replace. The home owners spend a fortune on landscape and a removal/replacement of this piece of concrete would cost a bundle. Most (all) of the time excavating a pool deck will require plumbing, electrical. Often the pool edge is tied into the walls and believe me, there's nothing worse than pushing a wall a few inches out of line. ugh...... I used to walk away from replacement of these projects as I know the time involved removing them. Home owners don't understand what it takes to replace this slab, especially with a cantilevered edge. From the photos shown, it seems the slab is in viable shape. With the correct equipment and procedure, this can be a money making endeavor. But as glams stated, there is easier money to be made. I don't mind spending my time on 1 project and make the same as staging 3..... unless distance makes this one a pain to stage. gene ec-Indy

If you asked an adrenaline junkie if he would like to ride on the OUTSIDE of the bullet train he would say yes thinking it would be the craziest thing ever..(the pool deck in it's current condition and you fixing it is the train thing) BUT if he slips at ALL....he looses it all. ( once again you and the pool situation) I hate telling people they need to start over or that I don't want to incur someone else's BIG skrewups but sometimes you have to if you want to keep your bank account in the black not the red.

Posts: 267 08/02/10 07:49 PM	Go for it. Just make sure your prep charges are sufficent. OL cost will be the same. I'd price it to scarify twice or maybe even three times because you'll prob have to. You don't want to grind all those grout lines out. Rent a big machine and stay off your knees. If you normally charge $2.00 ft to scarify, charge 4 or 6 depending on passes. You'll prob still beat any bids to tear out and replace with new stamped concrete (if it's a pia to get to like Gene said, and they usually are). Scarifying that deep will also take care of any more loose spalding areas.

Posts: 5 08/16/10 11:03 AM	Thanks again everyone. I'll keep you posted if the project goes forward. The client knows it is a total mess realizes I will only be able to improve it so much. I will do a sample area for him for his approval. The plan is as follows: 1. Shot blast to within a couple of inches of the coping. 2. Leave coping alone, do not treat. 3. TF base coat 4. TP to fill in grout lines as best I can 5. TF top coat 6. and Splatter a final coat to hide what I can. 7. 2 coats of sealer with aluminum oxide in first coat.

With the patterned stamp that you are blasting you are surely going to have some shot lost thru the stamped joint lines. When those small piece of shot hit the bottom of the pool they rust causing spots on the liner that are very difficult to remove. As you might pick up here I have had to deal with this issue. Posts: 162 09/06/10 06:14 AM	scarifier w/9hp honda will do this work for you easily,,, where we'd usually estimate production at 200/400sf per hr, i'd halve that on this surface due to its beginning irregularities,,, sunbelt/rsc/united will have the machines - there is also a 25hp powered unit ( edco ) that would work even better, of course,,, gene mentioned it,,, that's a VERY special rental & i don't know of a source even here in atl OR charleston, sc,,, shotblast would never enter my mind - too slow + insufficient removal depth of existing conc - we'd charge $ 2.50sf for removal - machine & 2 guys - 1 on the machine & the other sweeping & bagging debris... make certain you've got a GOOD vac hooked up to it OR scarify wet,,, either way production will be the same,,, personally we like wet - faster results, less mess, & easier cleanup. you could always sub this to a conc grinder OR diy, too best [the original] everyone-in-the-pool yic-yac it is said freedom comes in 4 boxes - soap, ballot, jury, & ammo.

Posts: 17 09/08/10 04:07 PM	Sandblast, Stain, & Seal (or densify). For the really bad areas, grind out, bush hammer, or demo, then replace with a different but complementing pattern & color. NO ONE will be able to touch your price. Not the absolute perfect looking fix, but a sandblast finish is EASY to sell around a pool deck (no slipping). You only, fully, guarrantee the work where you did demo, and just guarantee the color from fading in the rest. Cover the pool with painters plastic to catch most of the sandblast debris, the pool pump can get the rest. I have my own blasting pot & compressor, but you can rent a sandblasting setup for about $300. Sand is cheap.
