Several ways to approach this. First off you need to remove the sealer. In a deep pattern that makes it tough. You could shot blast but with the unlevel surface, you loose a lot of shot. You could grind but that would take a month of Sundays removing that much surface. A scarifier might be the weapon of choice in your situation. Chew it off and then do a grind (if needed) to level out the surface.

As far as leveling out the surface, Once you have removed the sealer, do your normal prep. Power wash with a turbo bit, acid etch and neutralize, wash and apply base coat. If it's a really rough surface, use a soft bristle broom to apply your 1'st coat of Thin Finish. I would recommend a 2 coat base. The second base can be applied with a magic trowel pulled hard. (Pre-wet surface) bla bla bla.

Depending on what system overlay you are applying will determine just how smooth you want the surface after removing the sealer. If a Thin Stamped overlay I wouldn't get too crazy with leveling it out. The gauge rake will do that, just figure a little more product use.

Doing a Splatter, I would apply a third coat of Thin Finish Troweled on. Do a heavy knockdown to hide any unlevel areas.   gene   ec-indy
