At what point in the overlay process can I apply reflector enhancer?

We've added it to US (2:1 dilution) and sprayed it on the overlay after coloring. Really nice look that way. You can add it to epoxy, urethane, etc.. and apply that way. We've even experimented adding it to TF as coloring (little pricey to do that though). If you can think it, you can do it.

Ok so for some reason I can't post a new topic from my iPhone so I'm going to piggy back onto this topic. Bruce, I've done a bunch of overlays but still wanted to get your take and anyone else who wants to respond. I've doing a 400ft olay this week, no tape lines. 50/50 mix finish. Are we supposed to always do 2 coats TF then our TF/micro(50/50) ??? I've been doing one base coat, then my 50/50. I just wanted to clear this up bc someone asked me if I was positively sure this is ok. I don't feel like calling my dist at this hour so wanted to post. Do we really have to do 3 coats when no tape is involved? What's everyones take?

Brian,
As it has been explained to me, 2 base coats are to assure that all concrete is covered by material as a bond coat. The reasoning for this is that newbies are still learning how to apply and how much to apply. Usually when starting out, the first base coat goes down extremely thin and does not completely cover the slab creating a poor bond coat. My opinion would be that if the base coat is heavy enough and that all concrete is sufficiently covered, then you would be able to go over that with your texture coat. I myself would only go that route if I was doing a 100% coverage texture coat. This is my observation and not necessarily the route that a distributor or HQ would tell you. Hope this helped. I'm sure I'll catch heat from posting this one out here. Oh well, Each installer should know their comfort zone. Bruce

No texture, no lines. Just 100% coverage of 50/50 trowel down. I keep going back and forth with it even though I've only had to do just one other floor this way. Just wanted to see what you other installers say. I dunno, just doesn't seem necessary to do 3 coats. Now if I was told it's a must, I will but at this point I'm not. Thx Bruce

Bruce pretty much hit it on the head. Since the mix is based on a white cement, say you spread your base coat out at 400 sq. ft. It still looks "covered" but isn't. It's the sands spacing that will bite you. Put your nose down to the floor. If you see ANY spacing of the sands then it's not covered properly.
On an interior surface, often it's powered troweled. Even if you go a light sand/grind/acid etch, the surface is still pretty tight. It's really quicker (and safer) to do 2 base coats instead of trying to apply a tight coverage. Now, say you wind up with the recommended 250 sq. ft. per bag coverage on one coat. Is it heavy in some areas and too light in others? This is really critical when applying a Micro Finish top coat. As you know, Micro has no bonding characteristics of it's own. It depends on the sands that it fills in between. If you have a large expanse between those sands, it will fail. On a "rough" surface you can get away with 1 base coat as the sands grab and pack tightly. Your base coat MUST look like a 100 (or what ever) grit sandpaper surface. Any spreads in the sands can bite you later. It's quicker for me to just throw down the 1st base coat and not worry about my footage. I've gotten 450 sq. ft. out of a first base coat. That second coat will stick like crazy and you'll get the recommended 250 sq. ft. out of the bag. The sands WILL be tightly bunched together. That's the KEY. Of course take your own distributors advise....bla, bla, bla,....... gene ec-Indy |

Makes absolute sense now. That first coat goes a longer ways and there are gaps in between the granuals...2 base costs then my 50/50 trowel. I honestly thought since there was 50% thin fin in the micro it would be fit to grab but still, those gaps in the grains would get filled with the second base coat. Ok cool, that's what I needed. A refresher in thin finish 101.
Anyone having trouble starting new posts or sending private mesages with iPhone? Didn't used to have that issue. Thx Bruce n Gene. Too bad I couldn't make WOC. Brian |
