Posts: 37 11/20/09 06:40 AM	Tags : None Can anyone help me w/the procedure of doing an overlay on a countertop? What produce etc. (please don't tell me to go to a training class as I have no money right now!!) I already do flooring overlays but would like to make some sample boards to test it out for, hopefully future use. I've already done the Granicrete way so I know the basics, coloring, epoxy techniques. I just need to know the cement part of it, what EC product, how many coats, mixtures etc. Thank you in advance for any help.

Posts: 2454 11/26/09 07:54 AM Moderaor in training	edgewise, check your messages. As far as applying over existing formica, you need to abrade the surface, apply CPR 1000, let dry. Apply base coat of Thin Finish. Go from there. Another method is to abrade the surface, apply PT1 Epoxy and use silica sand to rejection. Apply base coat and go from there. Texturing, coloring, veining, marbling are just some of the tricks I teach in my PLUS class. Full depth and GFRC applications can also be achieved with Elite Crete products. You can embed objects, score, sandblast, polish..... just about anything you want on an EC top. Quartz, mica chips glow in the dark powders..... gene ec-Indy

But, I don't know how many times I get asked if I can install an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, sitting wall, fire place reface, retaining walls and caps, foundations. Kitchens and baths, window sills..... I know several counter top guys that do well but it's a tough field. I think it's a good add on to the flooring. I've installed masonry outdoor kitchens. It's really expensive to do a foundation up, stone/brick facade with full depth poured tops. With a metal framed, vertical overlaid, GFRC poured or overlaid counter, the costs drop way down on materials and time. You can also go over existing patios without a foundation/footings. You can customize it so much better than spending a day looking for the correct stones at the stone yard. Table tops are another direction to look at. If you have a small shop, you could kick these out on rainy or slow days. Find an outlet to sell them for you. I have one installer that's doing Reflector on stretched artist canvas. She just showed her work to a local artist that has a gallery here in town. Hell, if I thought I could make money at it, I'd offer customized toilet seats. Floors are defiantly where the money is. My problem is time..... I just don't have an abundance of it. gene ec-Indy

I figure with a base color and then reflector in coloring you are looking at a 1 to 2 day turn around and no rip out and reinstall. No concrete at all just epoxy. Maybe even spartical to speed up the process. Only problem with that is how quickly it sets up, it can get away from you. I have a scrap piece in my shop, need to pull my thumb out and do a sample to see how it holds up. Although yic is as subtle as a train wreck, i agree that the money is in flooring, especially acid staining. I do full pour counters and vertical stamped concrete, and you do not make nearly the money doing floors. I am trying to change my marketing strategy right now to focus more on interior. I have seen guys in here say they are 75% indoor work. I would love that as the climate in my part of this great country is either hotter than blazers or colder than a witches titty. Just arranged some TV advertising, will see how that goes. It helps that i have a Zimbabwean (you will have to look it up on the world map) accent, so i am hoping that it will help with getting the phone to ring. BTW I really like the counter zkorpionx did.
