Posts: 4 10/05/09 05:32 PM	Tags : None I'm working on a porch. Trowel down is 1 oz Desert Beige. Sprayed choc. stain at 15 to 1. After spraying, the stain turned kind of an orangeish colour in the areas the stain puddled. On the sides of the porch I brushed the stain on and did not turn the orangeish colour. It happened at my last job on top of the front step but not on the sidewalk part of the job. I am wondering if it is from spraying too much stain on the surface at one time?? Just my guess. What can I do about this? I have sprayed one coat of stain so far and will be spraying second coat of stain tomorrow morning. This is my 6th job so I am new at this! I did a choc. trowel down a few weeks ago, and sprayed choc stain at the same ratio but did not turn an orange colour. Also, as I was spraying the surface, in a few areas the stain ran down the side of the porch and left streaks. I brushed more stain on the sides but the streaks are still visible. What can I do about this? I tried dabbing the streaks with xylene but did not seem to work. Thanks in advance. Last Edited By: Marko 10/05/09 06:15 PM. Edited 4 times.

Posts: 2374 10/05/09 08:07 PM	Maybe someone else will chime in also. That's a pretty hefty dilution. You are causing color separation with that much water. Why so much? Portion Control Colorants are derived by several colors mixed together. that high of a dilution can cause the colors to actually move apart. I'm surprised you didn't get some "charcoal" looking overcast on your final color. The sides didn't separate because they didn't puddle and you kept them agitated by brushing them on. Each color of the mix will actually separate vertically. They weigh differently, charcoal (black) weighs the less and will float on top. I normally get rust overtones in the deeper areas with Desert Beige with some darkened almost charcoal looking haze on the upper areas of the texture. I never dilute over 8:1 and that scares me because of the decreased amount of Ultra Stone. Ultra Stone locks the color down and helps with the variegation or movement of the varying colorations. Be super careful when playing with charcoal this way. Because it floats on top, being the lightest of the particulates, it will dump off the edge of your puddles and create what I call bath tub rings. Normal mix for me is 2oz. color diluted 4:1. Depending on delivery, I can get all the colors of that bottle from light to dark. Remember, dilution does not lighten the color. It just spreads out the color particles. Ultra Stone is the carrier that suspends these particles and locks them down to not re-emulsify. Your vertical streaks will need a little more elbow. Try a hotter solvent if xylene doesn't cut it. if you can't get them out, take the same color and mix it 1:1 with Ultra Stone. Rag it on the area and have another rag (damp) to dilute it down (dabbing) and faux it in to hide the streaks. Oh, MAKE SURE you shake the hell out of the bottle before using..... very important! gene tone

Posts: 5 10/05/09 09:23 PM	There are some dark spots in one area. Not sure if it's from the stain puddling or something else. What colour of pcc will hide the dark spots and orange areas? Wish I had taken a few pics.

Posts: 2939 08/31/10 06:10 AM	Ha, Your going to get me into trouble here. I train 2oz. at 4:1 on all colors. I know the book says otherwise but I have found sticking with this formula saves a lot of guys applying it too heavy. My thoughts are if it's too light, apply another coat. Now if you load up heavy on the first round and suddenly it's too dark....... you're screwed. Of course I still get calls on how to lighten a 12oz loading of charcoal. Also, I never dilute over 6:1. My thinking is the Ultrastone is the "glaze", the carrier of the pigment. Not using it or diluting it too much will cause problems down the road. Now when "aging" the project with (mostly) charocal, I use 1, maybe 2oz. diluted 6:1. Careful not to puddle. This is just what I stick with on training. There's a ton of variables to this, especially with Sangria and Terra Cotta. I also show that it's not against the law to mix colors. gene ec-Indy

Posts: 3431 12/04/11 09:12 PM	Not sure what you are asking. The 2oz goes into 1 gallon of Ultra stone. Then 4 gallons of water. Theres a divider to make smaller mixes. I divide everything by 16. 1 Ounce of portion control equals 30 milliliters. Divide that by 16 equals 1.875 ml. Times 2 equals 3.75 ml. Now a gallon of Ultra Stone is 128 oz. Divide that by 16 and it comes up to 8oz. To make a small amount of color for a sample board, I use 8 oz.
