Had some 1x3's so I framed out the counter top we poured in the advanced Plus class.
Stapled diamond mesh on frame.
Applied scratch coat, let dry then applied stamp coat.
Stamped, carved and shaped.
Done for the day.

I just can't sit around and twiddle my thumbs so I thought I'd start a project in my shop. (It will look better when I get it done).

Note to self: Don't start this stuff late in the day and think you can get home for dinner. OK...... I finished the corners and had some extra mix so I stoned the short end of the side wall.
Oh, here's a pic of the glow in the dark stuff I picked up for class. Also, if you look hard, I applied the glow stuff on the counter top. I still have to put the final coat of PT1 to level it out and make smooth.
Update: I have a bunch of other thangs to catch up on so it may take me a few days to get back at this project. I'm kinda waiting to see what ideas come up for the fill in on the main base wall outside my stone circle. I have some really cool ideas on the inside of the circle. gene ec-Indy Update: Had a couple of hours so I did a brick pattern on the end. I also colored and sealed the carved stones. I didn't have a stamp so I had to figure this pattern out and carve it..... sheeesh..
Colored the brick today between projects.
I'm trying to keep these pics in one place to show the progress. Here goes.... Well I've sat for hours looking at the front of this island top trying to decide what to do. As I was producing radius template makers... (aluminum cylinder shaped) I decided to go with the running bond. Marked it out and starting carving.
Now here's a side view.
OK..... I've been trying to show the glow in the dark I have on this top. I finally figured out the setting on the camera to show it. I set up my tripod and didn't have the connector to hook it up. So I held it still and got "kinda" good shot. First pic is of my letters I cut out awhile back out of 1/2" styrofoam. I've not figured out where to use them yet. I sat these on the table top.
I shut the lights off, removed the letters and then tripped and fell on my ass trying to get to the camera. Once I regained consciousness I grabbed the camera and held it on top of the tripod. It's shaky but that's all I wanted to attempt. Take a peak as the glow shows up well showing the black where the letters laid.
More coming as I finish this up........ gene ec-Indy Oh, One more pic showing the tools used so far. The roller stamps, and the black stamp are made in the advanced plus class as are some of the other gadgets to make a texture. The aluminum cylinder in the middle was for making tight radius's in the pattern.

This is looking great. It makes my neck hurt just looking at how much time is involved in sitting and carving. Did you build up the stone columns with foam
or is that vertical mix placed that thick?

I've got 15 hours in it so far much of which was watching paint dry.... (waiting for the mix to set enough to start carving.) I thought about using foam
but wasn't sure what I was going to do so I just slapped in on thick and forced myself to make a design once it started to take set. This is 2 mixes so
far. I'm keeping track of costs and time to tell myself I'd go broke if this was the only thing I did. Does make for a good expansion to the overlays
though.
In my next Plus class, I want to make a metal stud framed stoned faced portable grill surround with a poured EFRC top as a prep area. (Now there's a mouth full). Of course I'll have to invent some spare time to prep the framing with hidden casters. gene ec-Indy |

INCREDIBLE ! ! You pulled off the herring bone brick, I love it ! ! Awesome work, my personal opinion is that the hollow aluminum cylinder is to lubricate
the artist while sitting on the floor carving all of this artwork. Keep it up brother. The letters on the glow in the dark is a great picture too ! !

Gene, did you spray the glow on with the letter in place as block outs? That's really cool! I think we all should petition the local Indianapolis art
museum for Gene to get his own wing. You have truly turned the rest of us into hacks no matter how good we are. Well, I'm a hack anyway! Just ask Brad.
(But I learned from the best...birds of a feather, you know)

Have you ever watched DIY Networks out takes from the show. They show a guy cutting a compound miter cut on a piece of trim and slapping it up and it fits
perfect. What they don't show are the 15 "other" tries to get it to fit.
The letters are not there. I just laid them out on top of the table so the light wouldn't charge the glow in the dark under them and then took them off for the shot. Wish I was smart enough to had incorporated them permanently. I had laid them out on the table for inspiration to use them in the wall. Hasn't come to me yet. gene ec-Indy |

I always wondered why they could do a demo and remodel on a whole house in a half hour and it takes me that long to get my tools set up. You are going to have this project in shape for your training this week eh? I wish I had some Glam candy to help me think up something really cosmic to do in the center oval. How can you do a reflector pop center piece with the letters in it and still have time to get ready for training?

Can you give some details on the glow in the dark top? Is it a powder? Did you use US? Are the day light colors the from the glow product or PCC? Thanks |

The day colors are acid stains..... and hydra stone. The glow n dark is a powder...... expensive at that. I purchased 2.5 lbs and it cost me $250.00 bucks. Way
too expensive to push. I'm setting up a supplier that has reasonable pricing on the powders. I'll let ya know when it is a done deal. gene ec-Indy

That is pretty cool. I could think of a few uses if it were affordable. How did you apply the powder? Sprinkle it on top? Mix it up in the TP? Seems like that
would waste most of it. If it were only on the surface it might stretch. At a hundred bucks a pound, I'd want every grain of powder on top glowing. Can you
mix it in US?

You're right, you need to apply it on top in a clear carrier. I mixed it with the PT1 and Reflector on this one and it didn't glow as well. Using acetone as a carrier works really well. Torginol has a glow chip that is pretty bright in a blue and a green glow. It only comes in a 1/4" size and has a whitish yellow day color. I'm going to get steal a grinder out of the kitchen and see it I can grind them up smaller. I think the chips are around $18.00 a pound. gene ec-Indy |
