CONCERNS FREEZE THAW CYCLE - OKLAHOMA CITY

Posts: 2 03/05/09 03:54 PM	Tags : None We are concerned with the severe freeze thaw cycle that Oklahoma experiences. We can have 40 degree temps. and rising up to 65 even 70 degrees during the day and that very night the temp will drop down below freezing. We feel that on these days the material has had ample time to dry, but not always. Should we take the risk or just stick to the days where the weather is more consistent and does not freeze by night and thaw by day. If anyone has any advice on this topic, it would be greatly appreciated. We also are wondering what kind of warranties are being offered by other contractors. We want to offer a limmited warranty. Also, we have several driveways that seem to be structurally sound but have consideralbe flaking and damage to the top. I would say some of them are almost 60 to 70% scaled off. Again, the structure seems to be stable ,it is the top that has gone bad. Should we resurface in this situation?

Posts: 2007 03/05/09 04:26 PM Moderaor in training	40 degrees and rising applying material. No freeze for a minimum 24 hour period. Products cure with heat, either self generated or external. Under 40 degrees it will not increase in strength. Also, you need to figure you are driving a lot of water into the surface. It takes some time for that to dissipate. The cooler it is, the longer it takes. You don't want that subsurface moisture to freeze. When I power wash a driveway, sometimes the whole surface is gone. You need to get to solid substrate then overlay. I offer a standard 1 year warranty with the option to warranty as long as they like if they sign up for a maintenance package. If anything is going to happen, it will do so doing the first winter. The most problematic are expansion joints. Installers do not honor them properly and will get a chip out at these locations. If a surface chip happens, look at the bottom of the chip. If there is concrete and not overlay, then it's not our product faulting. Easy fix. Record all mix designs, colors and even how you applied. You may to duplicate it someday. gene ec-Indy

Posts: 1447 03/05/09 05:50 PM	same ol' stuff - fine aggregate, white ceement instead of portland, water's water, & polymers replace the bfr's,,, usual good conc practices still apply as gene outlin'd,,, as eC doesn't generate all that much heat in hydrating, the existing conc'll ' heat sink ' what there is,,, you can ' hurry ' the mixes a bit w/accelerator but that takes some doing to get it right the 1st coujple of times. no matter what, unless the existing conc's sound, nothing'll work,,, you may find yourself brooming in the base coat if conditions require,,, gene mayn't agree but, imn-s-hfo, most problems're caus'd by improper finishing - trapping bleedwater under the surface - & not including ' air ' in the original mix - a rqmt for any ext conc subject to freeze/thaw,,, crazing & dusting're usually traceable back to adding too much water after the conc's on the ground. best [the original] i-don't-know-no-more-but-it-sound'd-good-when-i-read-your-post yic-yac its been said democracy comes in 4 boxes: soap, ballot, jury, & ammo !

Posts: 2008 03/05/09 08:36 PM Moderaor in training	The last drive I did I started power washing. By the time I stopped, I was blowing pea gravel base. Packed my stuff up and contacted owner. wound up taking it out and pouring new. Owner thought I was up selling until I took him by the ears and dug a hole in his concrete with a pick. Fooled me big time when I bid it. Found out the crete was poured late and temps went south that night. Told owner I could have overlayed it and ran to the bank. He finally came around and thanked me for not taking advantage of him....... He has sent me so many referrals I feel bad that he isn't on my payroll. Treat them square and if they have a heart, they will thank you. gene ec-Indy
