Posts: 1 02/16/12 07:01 AM	Tags : None Hi, I'm new to this and I have a few basic questions. I have been doing some trowel down sample panels with 1/4" tape and have some problems with spalling or corners popping or Ultra-Stone bleeding under my tape. I do roll the tape down and I have tried to keep the Thin-Finish relatively thin. What time am I exactly looking to pull tape on these trowel downs and am I just putting too much Ultra down (very light pooling) or should I just brush the Ultra on? Any help would be appreciated. Posts: 166 02/16/12 08:57 AM	Others will chime in on this but this is the process for trowel downs. 1 After neutralising the slab put down skim coat either with color in it or apply color after it's dry 2 tape down your pattern 3 lock down your tape with a thin layer of thin finish same color as your skim coat. if theres any bleed under it doesn't matter beacuse it's the same color let dry. 4 apply slightly thicker coat again either with color in it or spray color after it's dry. pull tape as soon as the top layer is dry enough to walk on. this makes it easier to pull without tearing the tape. if you wait too long you'll be sorry. Make sure skim coat is wet slightly before applying top layer. There are other things to consider but these are the basics.

When he says lock down coat basically what that is about is after you get your taping done, You mix up some more tf same color as base color and brush it over your tape. That will lock it down and help prevent bleed.. Another reason you do that is if you end up taping all day and you don't have time to get your texture coat done , it will protect the tape in case it rains. Nothing like taping all day then have it rain and mess up all that hard work. As for when you pull the tape depends on temp,conditions and what look you are trying to achieve. If you want a more chiseled look you will pull tape early. If you want nice clean lines you will pull tape later.. I have pulled the tape the next day . But it does depend on weather, what time I applied my texture coat and size of tape... Just mess around with your samples.. Keith Last Edited By: krh1965 02/22/12 10:03 AM. Edited 1 time.

So EC about putting down the color on the skim coat after its dried....sounds like a neat trick but woul only be PCC and water !! NO Ultrastone that would be a bond breaker.. I think the acrylics boys in Las Vagas do it that way.... you could rag it on also. and then tape and trowel.

Posts: 33 04/16/12 12:09 PM	save some of your grout color, and apply it over your tape with a brush or trowel thin, the color that bleeds under your tape will be the grout color. when you pull tape lines pull tape backwards not straight up. This will give you cleaner shear and sharp lines.
