Mod,  One of the reasons you use US neutral is to keep the color from grabing harder on the surface when you apply your color coat.  It gives it a more softer look. I do different formulas depending on the look you want to attain with the US neutral combinations. Basicly it is 2 parts water to 1 part stain for the application. Try it on a few sample boards to attain the look you are after.

Also when doing your coloring process after applying the US, you want to make sure you do it in light mix coats. Start out at 6:1 mix ratio of 6 parts water to 1 part US with the color you choose. I use 1 ounce of portion control colorant in a 1 gallon mix with that ratio. The reason for doing it this way is you can always make the surface you are coloring darker, but you can not make it lighter. I sometimes use a foam brush or small roller to apply the color coat. Just make sure to keep stirring your mix as you are applying it so that the pcc colorant does not settle.
