New Patio with small cracks

Posts: 1 07/30/11 06:57 PM	Tags : None Had a stamped concrete patio poured last week. I have noticed a bunch of hairline cracks. The stamp was ashlar slate and the cracks occur at edges of various bricks. I also have some white specks in a few spots. My concern is that cracks will get larger or more likely turn into chips.

Posts: 3 02/15/12 06:02 PM	Usually hairline cracks start to occur a few days after a concrete pour because of concrete shrinkage. The contractor should have placed saw cuts at about 8-10 ft apart and at corners of the concrete to help prevent this. I also like to have microfibers added to the concrete mix which also helps prevent cracking along with rebar at 2 ft intervals. Most of the time the hairline cracks will not get bigger if rebar was placed because water will "drain" through to the bottom of the slab but there are other factors as well. All the Best!

Posts: 3528 02/15/12 06:12 PM	If you get surface crusting (top dries too quickly) it will literally tear when you stamp it. These small tears enlarge during hydration. Often when it's windy out, direct sun, high humidity levels, will increase the likely hood. Posts: 990 02/16/12 05:58 PM	This will also happen when stamp mix is more like a mortar mix . I have what ever concrete company i use to mix about 300 pounds more sand in mix , take out that amount of rock . Use 1/2 or 3/4 inch rock . This will keep it from pulling and still give you a good stamp texture . It works much better than a concrete mix with 1 inch gravel . I usually use wire mesh and fiber in mix for my stamp work . Glad i havent had to tear one out . Tom M
